Illness and Disability: How to Survive the Loss of Employment

On October 2, 2007 I made the crucial decision of leaving my job after four years of service.

For the past eight months or so, my health was declining rapidly.
Acquiring both fibromyalgia and a white blood cell
disorder which I've had for sometime now, is a disaster waiting to happen. The white blood cell disorder leaves me
with the ability to capture just about any virus that comes my way, plus very weak and fatigued.
Fibromyalgia is known for tying knots in your muscles, cramps, and also weak and fatigued. Those are just a few
of the physical symptoms. Mentally, it steals your focus, thoughts and leaves you feeling like you've gone completely
crazy or just plain stupid. Also, many suffer from anxiety and irritable bowel syndrome because of it.
Movement, the lack of movement , stress and being emotional all can cause intense flair ups with this disease.

With all that being said, I was working as a scheduler for a health care company.
Phone calls are 99% of your job. Corresponding with both clients and their families, plus all the employees.
This occupation can be very negative and heart wrenching at times. It requires multitasking, intense focus and
concentration, and the ability to reflect a smile in your voice always.

Needless to say, I was losing my ability to focus and concentrate, and the negativity that surrounded me was adding to my symptoms. Every day was a little worse than the day before. The soreness and brain fog were creeping in fast. I continued to give 100% until my body shut down and I was on a short medical leave for two weeks.

Being this was not the first job I lost because of my illness's, I knew this would be my last.

SURVIVAL TIPS

1. LET THOSE WHO ARE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BE NOTIFIED-
As I called the office devastated, my boss was very
understanding and actually waived my two weeks notice, along with an offer for an extended medical leave. She assured me of the very best reference and complimented my work ability and efforts despite my situation.
My co-workers supported my decision, but knew it was inevitable. I am so grateful for all of their love and support over the last four years.

2. ACCEPT THE SUPPORT OF THOSE CLOSE TO YOU-
As I was freaking out a little, my husband put his arms
around me and said " Honey, if that would of been me, there's no way I could of stayed as long as you did. I would of quit a year ago!"

3. GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO GO THROUGH ALL THE EMOTIONS- I was devastated. I cried and cried hard. I yelled, I screamed and I swore as I was pacing back and forth. I hated my life at that moment.

4. TAKE SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF- At this point I still was
not feeling well, but I rested, did some reading, and
took things easy. I took the pressure off for the time being. I spent a lot of time outdoors with my dog Maggie Leigh, just breathing in the fresh air.

5. FIND A NEW STARTING POINT- I did some soul searching
to figure out what my next move would be. I'm very determined and driven. Keeping a positive attitude and a sense of humor kept me on track. Now I can fully concentrate on my home based business I started on a part time basis. Full throttle ahead.

Just remember, when one door closes another opens, but you need to be aware. Keep an open mind. From my experience, there is a much better opportunity waiting and you become that much closer to your goals and dreams.
