Depression: The Soul Snatcher

Depression. What an awful disease that turns your life and the lives around you upside down.

Someone close to me is currently battling this beast.
I find it very upsetting and it scares me somewhat.
The brain is a very mysterious being in itself. It seemed to happen in a blink of an eye.

Sure, I've had my bouts with this a little at one time or another, but not to the extent where I was crippled by it.
Most people do get depressed sometime in their life, but it seems there are those that can pick up the pieces after a short period of time, and those who forever fight with it.

The difficulty in watching this person struggle from being a very intelligent, caring and giving, mother, wife and school teacher, to an almost like child state is heartbreaking to say the least. To hear her talk and act like a completely different person than I knew is very strange. Things she just wouldn't do. So out of character...

I've had many conversations with her, listening to her state how she hates herself; how she is a terrible mother and wife; how she doesn't deserve love from anyone; why she feels she isn't good enough; how the panic, anxiety and stress of it all is just to unbearable for her to make any rational decisions. The tears and fears, and reaching out to anyone who will listen, then being so embarrassed by her actions, that she sees no hope and just wants to end it all.

This disease seems to snatch your soul and put you in a world of your own while not letting go. I guess this must be some kind of defense mechanism our brain gives us to protect us until we are ready to continue to live in society. She is getting the professional care she needs at this time plus a ton of support from all who love her and her family.

Family and friends are also effected. We watch in the background at an extreme loss of what to say or do. How do we help?

As I sit and write this, I wonder if she will ever come back to us... I'll just have to be ready, willing and able to do whatever I can to help her when she's ready.
